Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
