The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
