One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
