Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
