The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
